How to Choose a Play Mat for Tummy Time

A play mat can provide a comfortable surface for supervised floor play, but it does not need to be elaborate. Look for a mat that lies flat, is easy to clean, and suits the space where you can stay close to your baby. Check the manufacturer's age guidance and inspect seams, attachments, and toys for damage. Avoid loose pieces that could detach or create a choking risk.

Tummy time should happen only while your baby is awake and directly supervised. Start with short sessions and build gradually as your baby becomes more comfortable. You can also place your baby on your chest while you are awake and alert, if that feels suitable. If your baby becomes tired or falls asleep, move them to a safe, flat sleep space and place them on their back.

Keep the mat on the floor, away from stairs, heaters, cords, and pets. Remove toys that are not suitable for your baby's age, and do not attach items in a way the product instructions do not allow. The goal is an inviting place to move, look, and practice emerging skills—not a device that promises a developmental outcome. If your baby strongly resists tummy time or you have concerns about movement, ask your healthcare provider for ideas tailored to your child.
