Bath time is easier when everything is ready before your baby gets wet. Gather a towel, clean clothes, washcloth, and any gentle products you plan to use. Check that the room is comfortably warm and test the water temperature before placing your baby in it. A shallow amount of water is enough for a small infant; follow current safety guidance and the instructions for any infant tub.
Stay within arm's reach and keep a hand on your baby whenever they are in or near water. Never leave a baby alone in a bath, even for a moment, and do not rely on bath seats or supports to prevent drowning. If you need to answer the door or get something you forgot, lift your baby out and take them with you. Keep electrical devices away from the bathing area.
Newborns do not need frequent full baths, and a gentle wash may be enough between baths. Use products sparingly and discontinue anything that appears to irritate the skin. Dry folds carefully and dress your baby in clean, comfortable clothes. Empty the tub immediately after use and store it safely. If you have questions about a rash, skin sensitivity, or bathing a baby with a medical concern, ask your healthcare professional for advice tailored to your child.
